Giving back to our local military community is a large part of the NOSC Hampton Roads mission. Each year, through various fundraising activities and our two boutiques, The Tidewater Collection and The Tidewater Collection Too, NOSC Hampton Roads donates thousands of dollars to organizations that provide assistance to service members and their families in the Hampton Roads area. Did you know that proceeds from the Tidewater Collection supports military organizations in our community? When you shop or volunteer at the Tidewater Collection, you are improving the quality of military families- it’s a win-win! Your time and dollars make a difference! Below are testimonials from a few of the organizations we’ve helped in the past. With your support, we can continue to help with their good work. “United Through Reading is so grateful for our partnership with the Naval Officers' Spouses' Club of Hampton Roads since 2009. Together, we have kept thousands of military children connected to their Sailors through video-recorded storytime! With NOSC HR's donation in 2021, we outfitted the USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) with video-recording equipment and supplies so Sailors onboard can be video-recorded reading children's books for the special kids in their lives during upcoming work-ups and deployments.”
“Ocean View Little League Challenger Baseball in Norfolk is a program for individuals with disabilities. All special needs players are welcome, age 4 years through adults to be part of a team, make friends and join in the fun. Many of the OVLL Dodgers and Mets are members of Exceptional Military Families and live in Lincoln Military Housing. OVLL provides all the players' equipment (bats, gloves, helmets and adaptive equipment), covers the registration and insurance required by Little League and gives each player a uniform shirt and hat. We aim to make it possible for every player to be equipped to play, regardless of their financial situation!”
“Tony is a Navy Veteran who lives in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Like many other Veterans, he would benefit from a service dog. The facility best able to help him was in San Antonio, TX. The long distance was just the first obstacle. Airfare would be expensive – and traveling with an animal is a challenge in itself. Angel Canines and Wounded Warriors, a program of Mercy Medical Angels, helped Tony fly over all of these problems. Assistance with travel was just the beginning. They made sure that his ticket stated there would be a service dog with him on the return flight. On top of that, they called TSA to make sure Tony and his service dog wouldn’t face difficulties in the security line. “From when they first contacted me,” Tony said, “they were outstanding.”
Tony describes his life with Cinch, his service dog, like the closest friendship possible. The bond reminds him of how it was in the military, where “someone always has your back.
