New Year, New and Old ChallengesNOSC Hampton Roads Organization Update
Hello members! We don’t often give a status update of the organization, but thought it was important that you know what is happening with your club. We have had some big turn of events in the last few months and wanted to share our plan with you. The two main focuses of NOSC HR are philanthropy and social connection. Philanthropy stems from volunteering and community service through our two all volunteer run Tidewater Collection boutique shops at Naval Station Norfolk and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Social connection happens through volunteering, and participation in an number of events hosted by or coordinated by NOSC and its members. Profits from Tidewater Collection shops sales are distributed every May back to local organizations that serve the military community such as the USO, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, United Through Reading and many others. In 2022 we were able to grant requests for a total of $15,000 to 22 organizations. Having enough volunteers to run the shops has always been a challenge, but most particular in this post-COVID era. We have had some staffing changes and have welcomed the shift of former bookkeeper Tiki, as the new store manager. That leaves two very important jobs unfilled: Bookkeeper and Social Media Chair. Both are vital positions that need your help immediately. We were on track to meet or exceed last year’s $15,000 goal until devastatingly, we had a major pipe burst and flood inside our Norfolk store on Christmas Eve . After receiving the call, our then the shop manager arrived to several inches of water on the ground and pouring from the ceiling. There is over $1000 in damages to merchandise alone as well as display furniture, electronics, and the walls and carpet. After a week of cleaning and packing up the store, all merchandise and display items are now housed in a storage unit while the shop is awaiting repairs. The shop is closed indefinitely. With the Norfolk store closed and the hospital shop open only two days per week, we are still struggling to staff the store. During the February 2nd NOSC Board meeting, we decided with heavy hearts that unless we can immediately staff the Portsmouth shop with 20 new volunteers in rotation that this shop will close as well, at the end of February. Along with this difficult decision, we have also decided that the NOSC HR organization will dissolve at the end of this membership year in June 2023. We have asked for volunteers to take on leadership roles on the leadership board, committee chairs with little to no response. This decision can be overturned if new Board members join now to serve this remaining membership Year (through June 2023) and next year (June 2023-June 2024). To become a Tidewater Collection volunteer, Bookkeeper or Social Media/Publicity chair please contact Tidewater Collection Manager ttcmanager@noschamptonroads.com To join the NOSC Board please contact NOSC President MiMi Wilcox at President@noschamptonroads.com Accepting volunteers and Nominations for all Board and Committee roles. |
